Green Shirt Day! On April 6, 2018, Canadians were heartbroken to hear the news of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Of the 29 passengers, sixteen lost their lives and thirteen will all bear physical and emotional scars for life.  For Parents:  We wear GREEN to remember those involved in the crash but also to acknowledge the importance of organ donation.  On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries. His parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on. They did so because Logan told his parents he was registering as an organ donor and that he was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt. Ric passed on June 27th, 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved 6 lives. Send me a picture of you wearing green! Experimenting with Peeps:  Today we are doing a science experiment together.  Can you predict what is going to happen to the peeps in the 4 different liquids...

Good morning Kindergarten friends and parents! Here is our week at a glance:   Parents ... this video is for YOU!!! Thank you SOPHIE for sending in the video of the "Days of the Week" song.  You are wearing my favorite hoodie!  Daily Message:   Word Work:  High frequency words are quite simply those words which occur most frequently in written material.  For example, "and", "the", "as" and "it".   Some of the high frequency words can be sounded out using basic phonic rules, e.g. "it" is an easy word to read using phonics. However, many of the high frequency words are not phonically regular and need to be memorized.  This is the list that I like to use when teaching sight words to my Kindergarten students.  We will be focusing on 3 words a week.  This week our words are "the, of, to".  Today your child can watch the following videos :   Here are some short v...

Happy Friday everyone!  Here is what is on the agenda for today... Math:   It's the 3rd day of April!  How many ways can you make 3?  What number comes BEFORE 3?  What number comes AFTER? Good morning Kindergarten friends! Task 1:  In the daily message, encourage your children to fill in the /ing/ at the end of morning.  See if they can find and circle the words "to, you, love, friends".  Can they fill in the missing letters that make the /th/ sound?  Can they circle the words that have the "to" in them?  We call words that are made up of 2 little words "compound words". Task 2:  Show all of the ways you can show the #2. Did you know that Kathryn Otoshi also wrote a book called "Zero"?  Check it out here .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrTkFtg0Pbw Here's a link to our favorite Gonoodle song:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpD9kRyBn8o Here are some other ideas for you to do this month.  Thanks to my grade 1 friends for the idea!

It's APRIL! Hurray!

Good morning kindergarten parents! At the beginning of each month, when adding a new calendar piece to our calendar, we spend some time showing all of the ways we can "show" that number.  Today being the 1st day of April, we are going to look at what's happening this month (special days, birthdays) and talk about the number 1.  I will go over how to print the number 1 and remind the students of all of the different ways we have been showing our number awareness since the beginning of the year.  For the number story portion of the task, your child can tell you the stories for you to write them down.  Many of the students use their fingers to help them come up with stories.  You can also encourage your child to use manipulatives (legos, coins, stuffed animals etc).  If you wish, you can email me their work but it is not necessary.  We will be doing this same short activity for the numbers to 10 as we continue doing the calendar on a daily basis. This...

Terrific Tuesday!

Good morning Kindergarten friends!  Thank you to everyone who responded to my email from yesterday.  Now that I have an idea of what the technology needs are from everyone, our planning can begin!  I will be posting my blog by 8:30 in the morning each day with a task that I would like you to complete.  Learning in Kindergarten is very hands on and much of our learning occurs through play based activities, thus many of the activities given will follow this philosophy.  I want this to be a time for you and your child to engage in their learning adventure together.  I know what it's like to fight with a child over homework and at home tasks and it really isn't conducive to learning or fostering the positive relationship with your child.  Helpful links from CBE:  Ongoing Learning Page on CBE website. https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/default.aspx Online resources posted to CBE website:  https://www.cbe.ab...
