Marvelous Monday!

Happy Monday, I mean TUESDAY!!!

A few things before I forget ...

The students are bringing home their poetry books with 2 of the songs that we will be performing at our Spring concert the evenings of March 4 and 5.  We are practicing lots in our classroom and during our time in music, however any time that you could help your child practice at home would be appreciated!  As you can imagine, it takes lots of practice for us to be able to perform in front of a crowd.  We want to do our very best!!!

There will be two performances on March 4 and 5. To accommodate all families in our gym we are dividing our performances:
The students with last names that begin with A-K will be performing on Wednesday.
The students with last names that begin with L-Z will be performing on Thursday.

There will be a daytime (Wednesday 9-10am and Thursday 1-2pm) performance and an evening (6:30-7:30pm) performance on each day.
Tickets will be needed for the evening performance.  Each family will get 3 tickets with a possibility of obtaining extra ones. If your child is unable to attend the evening performance, please let your child’s teacher know.

The songs can be found at ...

Thank you for your help and support!

Last week was a busy week considering we only had 3 days!  Our days consisted of doing all things valentine's including:

1.  Estimating the amount of valentine's candy in 3 different bottles.  We used a number chart that went up to 50 to help us try and pick (and print) the numbers that we thought were the closest estimation!  Today the afternoon class helped count the number of items in each container and we were a bit surprised with our results.  We learned to group the items in groups of 5 or 10 to make our counting easier.

2.  Valentine's suncatchers and bracelets and necklaces.  This was a fun craft to do and the students loved watching my laminator at work!  We hope you loved how they looked hanging in your window!

3.  Flower delivery:  I purchased some carnations that the students helped deliver to all of the staff in our school.  One of our support workers commented that it was the first flower she had ever received on Valentine's!

4.  Working with Cathy Beveridge:  Our work last week (and tomorrow) has us making a winter picture that we will orally tell a story about.  We can't wait to share our finished projects with you!

Some of the other learnings of the past week include:

1.  Talking about odd and even numbers.  The students are really getting the hang of figuring out what makes an even (divisible by 2) and odd (not divisible by 2) number.  We figure out if the calendar number of the day is odd or even by looking at the number in the one's position and deciding whether it can be evenly divided in 1/2.  We are using visuals such as trying to divide the students in 1/2, our fingers and math manipulatives to enhance our understanding of this concept.

2.  We learned the importance of being flexible on Wednesday when Ms. O's brand new waffle maker wouldn't work and our waffle eating was delayed.  A huge thank you to Cathy B. who was also flexible and let us enjoy our waffles while we were listening to her speak.  Thank you to Autumn and Leah for their flexibility and perserverance in figuring out how to get the waffles to bake and NOT stick to the pan!  Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies for our yummy waffles!

3.  We have started to receive our Love Button emails and pictures and have been plotting them on our map.  Our buttons have travelled to Okotoks, Ft. McMurray and down South to California.  We can't wait to see how far they will travel!

Lastly, I have to thank everyone for their constant support and generosity!  I am always so honored to receive little gifts and, my favorite, heartfelt cards!  I truly appreciate all that you do to make my time as a teacher so enjoyable!

This week, we will continue to work on getting ready for our performance.  The morning class has library tomorrow morning and the afternoon, Thursday afternoon.

Friday is the AFTERNOON class' turn to attend.

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend with their family.

Ms. O.
