SNOW!!!!

Happy Sunday parents, guardians and my favorite 4 and 5 year olds on the planet!  Hopefully everyone is staying warm and enjoying the snowy weather!  Kids seem to enjoy it more than the adults do ... especially in September!

Last week we were busy talking about Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.  Thank you to everyone who sent in toonies to support cancer research.  Despite the weather, we had a great time on Friday at our assembly and run.  It was a tad wet, but all of the Kindergarten students were dressed appropriately for the weather.  Thank you!!!!  A big shout out to our Grade 4 classes who organized such a touching assembly.

The grade 5/6 team has been busy organizing and planning for our Orange Shirt Day assembly that will take place Monday afternoon from 12:30-1:30.  Students are encouraged to wear orange to show our support for those students who attended residential schools and those who are still impacted by the effects of those experiences today.  We will be discussing the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day and why we wear orange in our classroom on Monday.

In math we have continued to work on our understanding of sorting and number sense.  Mathematics is embedded in our everyday activities (such as attendance and calendar activities) as well as center activities such as big blocks, lego and math manipulatives.  In the gym, students might be grouped based on an attribute (such as who is wearing short sleeves, long sleeves and no sleeves) and have to guess the sorting rule by which they were sorted.  This makes it fun and part of our everyday routines.  Through calendar activities, we are predict the number that comes next, count up to that number (from different starting places, not always 1) and look at the patterns in numbers (such as the teen numbers all starting with 1 ...  1-0, 1-1, 1-2 etc).   After attendance, when we know how many students are missing that day, we are learning about subtraction by taking the number of students away from the number of students in our class.  It's amazing how students understand these concepts, even if they can't name them!

Last week we continued to work on identifying simple sight words in our daily message.  So far we have concentrated on "to", "we", "love", "Ms. O".  We will continue to add to our sight word collection weekly.

This week we will move to having some more structured centers such as a math center where students will be able to sort objects indepedently and a fine motor center to help develop our fine motor (and therefore printing) skills.  I am also introducing a literacy center where students can practice printing the letter /Aa/ using a variety of materials such as Wikki Stiks and play doh.  Students will rotate through these centers (1 a day) before choosing our regular centers.

We have 2 students who are celebrating birthdays this weekend!  Happy Birthday to Jade and Keagan!  Birthdays are a big deal in Kindergarten, so students are allowed to bring a birthday snack for the class.  There are 18 students in the morning class and 22 in the afternoon.  Please ensure that your snack does not contain peanuts or peanut products and is divided into individual portions (such as Rice Krispie squares, cookies etc).  Please NO CAKES (they are messy to serve and eat!).

Have a wonderful evening!  Drive safe tomorrow!

Ms. O.
